The Birth of the Brother Armand Lammineur Foundation Inc. (BALFI)

The Brother Armand Lammineur Foundation Inc. (BALFI) was born from a heartfelt initiative led by the Maryhurst Seminary Graduates of 1975 during the 70th Anniversary of Maryhurst on March 28, 2025. United by a deep devotion to their alma mater, the 1975 Graduates—Ernie da Jose, Godfrey Guerra, Bernie Guirgen, Atty. Francis Baraan, Rene de Guzman, Glenn Amane, Fr. Vic Munar, Larry Geronca, Felipe Lumiwes, Alex Rimando, and Albert Liggayu—launched a PHP 300,000 seed fund. Envisioned as a “tree bearing fruit,” this fund aimed to provide sustainable support for seminarians facing financial hardships at Maryhurst. At the reunion, Ernie shared this milestone, proposing a foundation to honor Brother Armand Lammineur, a cherished figure in the Maryhurst community, to formalize and perpetuate their mission.

The announcement struck a chord with attendees, sparking enthusiasm but also prompting questions about the foundation’s structure. To maintain momentum, Ernie deftly shifted focus to fundraising, securing an impressive PHP 611,500 in additional pledges from 25 of over 100 attendees, significantly strengthening the initial fund.

A pivotal moment unfolded post-reunion when the Freshmen Class of 1975, led by Ted Brillantes, Guy Simondac, Jun Dulawan, Atty Justo Justo and Bishop Jun Andaya from the Freshmen Class of 1975 approached the 1975 Graduates. United by a shared commitment to Maryhurst’s mission, they proposed merging their resources with the existing pledges. This cross-batch collaboration became the spark that ignited BALFI’s creation.

In the weeks that followed, a vibrant group chat of over 70 alumni emerged as a think tank, refining the foundation’s vision. The group set an ambitious goal: raising over PHP 1 million to establish an endowment and fund income-generating projects. This strategy prioritized long-term sustainability, reducing reliance on one-time donations, and opened possibilities to support broader Maryhurst alumni initiatives.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the planners agreed to establish BALFI as a non-profit foundation, capable of accepting donations and aligned with their altruistic goals. Membership would be open to alumni and their families through a structured application process to foster committed engagement.

Named the Brother Armand Lammineur Foundation Inc in tribute to Brother Armand’s enduring legacy, BALFI was formalized as a testament to collective vision. Ignited by the Graduates of 1975’s seed fund, amplified through cross-batch unity, and solidified by strategic planning, BALFI stands as a lasting tribute to Brother Armand, dedicated to advancing Maryhurst’s mission and uplifting its seminarians for generations to come.

Brother Armand Lammineur, CICM (April 1, 1913 May 22, 2000)

Bro. Armand was a remarkable figure whose life journey transitioned from a soldier to a beloved missionary and horticulturist in Baguio City. Born on April 1, 1913, his deep love for flowers was matched only by his profound devotion to the Maryhurst seminarians, as he brought a heart and soul to the seminary. As a horticulturist, he transformed Maryhurst into a floral paradise, cultivating an impressive array of plants— including anthuriums, daisies, asters, marigolds, azaleas, hibiscus, dahlias, roses, sunflowers, begonias, poinsettias, chrysanthemums, orchids, and more—creating a serene haven enhanced by exotic species. This passion for flora flourished alongside his tireless commitment to the seminarians, whom he truly loved.

He regularly made the rounds of CICM schools in Luzon, “campaigning” passionately for missionary vocations, particularly within the CICM order. When a seminarian was admitted to Maryhurst, the first smiling face he encountered was that of Bro. Armand, a warm welcome that set the tone for his journey. Bro. Armand tirelessly solicited donations from Belgium and other countries to support numerous seminarians throughout his years at Maryhurst, contributing inestimably to their formation. Even those who did not complete their studies at Maryhurst would never forget the care, solicitude, and genuine concern that made the seminary memorable. His efforts to keep the gardens beautiful and to tend to canaries and other pets in the mini-zoo were intentional acts to make Maryhurst a true “nest”—a comforting home—where the seminarians felt at ease.

In 1986, he briefly retired to Belgium, only to be drawn back to Baguio by its invigorating climate. Undeterred by a devastating fire in 1991 that razed Maryhurst, he rebuilt the garden with unwavering resolve while continuing his mission. This dual dedication earned him the cherished moniker “Rose King of Baguio” and the admiration of the community. In 1997, the City Council honored his contributions by naming him an “Adopted Son of Baguio City.” He passed away peacefully on May 22, 2000, leaving behind a lasting legacy of floral splendor and selfless devotion to the seminarians that continues to blossom.

Mother Mary’s Guidance to BALFI

Mother Mary has guided BALFI every step of the way. On June 27, the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, we successfully completed the P1M endowment fund required by SEC. On August 22, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary, we received SEC approval. Finally, December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we hold the BALFI Launch Concert and our Annual General Meeting, marking another significant milestone in our journey.

BALFI LOGO

The Bro Armand Lamminneur Foundation (BALFI) logo features a vibrant design with seven colorful petals (teal, yellow, green, purple, red, blue, and orange) arranged in a circle, symbolizing diversity and unity. At the center, a red heart with two silhouetted figures represents compassion, community, and connection, reflecting the foundation’s mission. The circular text “BRO ARMAND ONE HEART ONE SOUL” emphasizes solidarity and shared purpose, while the name “Bro Armand Lamminneur Foundation” below adds clarity and professionalism.
The seven petals carry biblical significance, symbolizing completeness, divine order, and perfection—echoing the seven days of creation, the seven feasts, and the seven seals in Revelation. This suggests BALFI’s holistic approach to supporting and restoring communities, aligning with values of compassion and reconciliation.
